DJ in Calgary - The Playlist and how to believe in DJ to play the best songs. It’s a topic plenty of couples struggle with. We DJ lots of events in the Calgary area and this topic comes up a whole lot with the couples we meet.

Nearly all of our couples are involved with avoiding cheesy wedding music. I’m discussing stuff like the Chicken Dance, Macarena, or even the YMCA. And most of our couples desire to include their favorite songs within the day. So creating a playlist for the reception seems to make a lot of sense.

We love to including your favorite music in your wedding reception. It’s an easy way for us to make your wedding personal and unique. And it’s meaningful to you personally when you hear an audio lesson that makes it really feel like it’s your day.

But picking your music may be tricky - and here’s why.

You won’t be capable of force your family and friends to bounce to the music you chose any more than you are able to force them to have a great time. You may have chosen the coolest songs, but if your guests don’t respond to them your DJ won’t have the ability to prevent an empty oasis.

As a DJ, that’s about the worst thing in the planet. So DJs have developed types of methods dealing with the playlist question. Some DJs will simply allow you to request a small number of songs so they still have the flexibility to maintain the party going. Other DJs will have anything you want and put the success (or not enough success) of the party up to you.

We encourage couples to be involved in the music selection. We would like you to tell us everything you like. But if we’re given an extremely long list of Must-Play songs the party area may suffer. It all hinges on the songs on your list. If you maintain it classic, familiar, and simple to dance to everyone can get involved. But if your songs are eclectic or if perhaps your group is quite traditional the party might not work out the way you expect.

We’ve found out that it works best to use a Do-Not-Play list of forbidden songs, a summary of Must-Plays, and a list of songs you’d like to hear. Combining that with our experience and power to read the crowd we’ll be capable of fill your party area. We will play all the Must-Plays and as many of your other requests as possible while still working to maintain your dance floor packed!

That can bring us to the second part - trust.

If you'd like the best of both worlds you need to trust that your DJ understands you and your vision for your wedding. In the event you don’t have that trust you won’t have the ability to let go of control and have confidence in them to do what’s best for your party and then for your wedding.

Just what exactly should you do?

First - choose the right entertainer. This is the most important part. You need to feel understood. Discuss how he will handle your request list and what he will do if it isn’t working.

Second - decide what exactly is most important to you. Can it be important for you to hear every song on your list? Or is it more valuable that your guests are experiencing a great time and dancing the whole night? You can have both, but one must have priority on the other.

Ask your entertainer for his professional opinion on whether your requested music will keep people dancing. He should give you an honest assessment based on his experience. If you picked the right entertainer he’ll be a pro - and he’ll be good at what he does. Trust him and take his opinion into account.

Calgary Wedding DJ - It is your wedding and ultimately you might be paying someone to play the guitar for you. If you need to choose every song that gets played then it is your right to achieve this. The dancing may not be as good as it could have been though. We prefer to talk as much as we have to with our couples about what songs will and does not be played. Often there is a way to work in your favorite songs - even the ones you can’t dance to - and keep your guests having a good time.
